When feasible, research manuscripts should provide a data availability statement, identify repositories and persistent identifiers, and explain access limits. Sensitive personal information, confidential archives, protected intellectual property and legal restrictions are legitimate exceptions. Claims based on unavailable material must still be adequately documented for scholarly appraisal.
